Celiac Disease Treatment

By rickie wright at 2011-01-19 00:50:50
Gluten will be found in breads, pastas, cake, pastries, donuts, cookies and other obvious grain products. Gluten is also "hidden" in many processed foods such as frozen french fried potatoes, snacks, soy sauce and cereal. Even many non-food items like cosmetics, and household cleansers contain gluten.

Before I give you a list of foods that must be avoided on a celiac disease diet, it is important that you understand that gluten is "hidden" in many processed foods. Processed foods like pre-prepared meals, cereal, frozen french fried potatoes, snacks, and sauces such as mayonnaise, mustard, and soy sauce often contain gluten. These are just to name a few to give you an idea. The celiac suffer needs to learn how to carefully read the labels on processed foods because glutenous traces are often found in them.

We may not know all the diseases in the world but it is very important though that we take note of the changes that occurs in our body. There are diseases that are silent and show little signs and symptoms only to find out that it is already too late to handle and still provide interventions or treatment for the disease. Now this is very depressing.

Also called celiac sprue, celiac disease is a relatively uncommon ailment, affecting approximately 1 person in 1000. It is caused by a sensitivity to gluten, a substance found in wheat, rye, oats, and barley. With extended exposure to gluten, the intestinal lining loses the tiny folds through which nutrients are absorbed and stops producing adequate amounts of digestive enzymes.

If this is true, how wise would it be to continue ingesting unnaturally high levels of gluten, once 'cured' just because we can? Sure it would make life simpler not following a gluten free diet, however maybe we should wait for gluten to be decreased at the source, the growing fields, before we return to a gluten filled diet.

The only treatment for celiac disease is a change of diet. Gluten must be removed from the sufferer's food intake. Many of the foods we ingest contain gluten, such as wheat, barley, and rye breads. Other foods like cake, pie, cookies, crackers, pizza, and fried foods using a wheat, barley, or rye coating must be eliminated from the diet. A drastic change in an individual's diet can lead to depression.

The most common symptoms prompting the blood test include: Anemia, diarrhea, malnutrition, abdominal pain, weight loss, joint pain, fatigue and weakness. A celiac blood panel may also be ordered for patients who have a family history of gluten intolerance or other autoimmune diseases.

The disease can be hard to identify because the symptoms vary so widely from person to person. Not every person has the same symptoms and not all the symptoms appear in each person who has the disease. In addition, many physicians aren't well informed about the disease making a diagnosis that much harder.

A common issue that causes the recurring symptoms of celiac disease is when the patient is consuming small amounts of gluten unintentionally as they are unaware of the foods that contain hidden or trace amounts of gluten such as found in certain additives and preservatives, or are manufactured in plants that produce other wheat products and utilize the same machinery which then "contaminates" the other foods with wheat gluten.
