Natural Toothache Remedies

By rickie wright at 2010-12-13 00:04:21
Toothaches may be caused by dental cavities, gum disease, tooth root sensitivities, cracked tooth syndrome, impaction and eruption. The dentist will examine the teeth and fully understand the cause of the toothache before he prescribes the right toothache treatment for you. So the toothache remedy will vary from case to case.

The cause of toothache may vary but is said to occur due to unhygienic oral health. Always keep your teeth and mouth clean and never let food particles to stay long in between your teeth or cavities. Brush at least two times (in morning and at night after taking meal) to prevent tooth decay and toothache.

Dental cavities are the most common cause of toothache. A cavity is a hole that cuts through the enamel and dentin and reach the pulp of the tooth, causing pain in the tooth. These cavities are caused by action of the sugars on the enamel and dentin. The treatment that the dentist may recommend may range from tooth filling, capping to root canal treatment.

Before providing permanent toothache relief, the dentist must understand and identify the root cause of the pain. He will begin with a preliminary physical examination of the teeth. He will record the medical history and eliminate the possibility of the toothache being a symptomatic physical response to any other medical condition. Some dental problems like barodontalgia (toothache due to change in barometric pressure) or atypical Odontalgia (pain that shifts from tooth to tooth) are not treated and no relief is provided. The former will disappear when the barometric pressure is removed and the reason for the latter is unclear and is often reported by middle aged women. The toothache relief, if any, provided will be symptomatic pain relief.

Useful Herbs in the Treatment of Toothache

1 Asafetida (Ferula fetida)

Asafetida is an excellent and fast-acting remedy for toothache problems. Its rich mineral and vitamin contents increase the strength of the teeth and enable them to bear the pain.

2 Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)

Clove has the best astringent and antiseptic properties among all teeth remedies. Clove oil reduces the pain greatly and also fights against the germs in cavities. Clove oil is an important ingredient in many toothpastes. Even dentists apply a material with clove oil as a vital ingredient when filling cavities.

3 Onion (Allium cepa)

Onion may give bad odor temporarily, but in the long run it is very beneficial to dental hygiene. Onion can fight against the germs that accumulate on the teeth and hence prevent future problems with the teeth. People chomping on one raw onion a day are protected from toothache, apart from various other health benefits.

Ayurvedic Treatments for Toothache

In case of toothache, a paste of several beneficial herbs is prepared. This is used as a tooth powder and used instead of toothpaste.

The Irimedadi taila is also used for application on the teeth. Regular use of this oil solves most dental problems.

In case the toothache is accompanied with gingivitis, then the following medications are prescribed:-
- A decoction of Triphala and Cyprus is used for gargling.

- A mixture of licorice is prepared in ghee and honey. This is applied on the teeth.

- Tablets of guduchi and mauktik kamadugha are prescribed twice a day for fifteen days.

Listerine is also a good remedy for toothaches. You can take one sip of Listerine and hold it in the affected area for a couple of minutes. You will experience burning sensations however it is only temporary. Don't apply Listerine just once and sit idle. You should apply Listerine every thirty minutes to an hour.
