Cancer can and does occur within the human skeleton meaning it is possible to have a malignant tumor or tumors in our joints and bones. If a cancer begins first in a bone, the resultant tumor is known as a primary bone cancer. It is possible for a tumor located elsewhere in the body to be the primary cancer and from there, a cancer may spread to the bone. This would be a secondary bone cancer. Most bone cancers occur within bones in the arms and the legs.

Cause and symptoms of bone cancer

The exact causes of bone cancer still seem to be a matter of research and study. The symptoms of bone cancer are linked to the position of the cancer-affected bone in the body. One of the symptoms of bone cancer is incidence of swelling or tenderness or pain in the area affected by bone cancer. The formation of a lump is another indication of bone cancer. Though the detection of a bone cancer related lump is a bit difficult in the initial stages of bone cancer, the lump can sometimes be felt (due to the restriction in movement that it causes) when the bone cancer occurs at joints (e.g. knee joints). However, none of these symptoms are prominent indicators of bone cancer.

The different kinds of bone cancer occur in different kinds of bone tissue. The most common kind is osteosarcoma. This kind of cancer begins to form in the ends of bones. As the body grows, the ends of the bones are the places where bone tissue starts to form. People aged 10 to 25 are more likely to contract osteosarcoma. Men are more likely than women.

This cancer forms in the middle part (shaft) of large bones and most often affects the hip bones and long bones in the thigh and upper arm, but can also occur in the ribs. Chondrosarcoma is a type of tumor that forms in the cartilage (rubbery tissue around the joints) and are found mainly in adults. Other types of bone cancer include fibrosarcoma (malignant giant cell tumor) and chordoma. These are rare cancers and most often affects people over thirty.

Diagnosis

Bone cancer can present itself in any of the bones of the body, but it is diagnosed most often in the long bones of the arms and legs.

Diagnosing bone cancer involves a number of tests, including: X-rays and bone scans to show the exact location and size of the cancer (these are always done prior to biopsy), bone biopsy where a small sample of the cancer is removed from the bone and examined in the laboratory for the presence of malignant cells, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan similar to a CT scan but uses magnetism instead of x-rays to build three-dimensional pictures of your body.
