Household Neem Tree Remedies

By rickie wright at 2010-12-23 00:16:50
The neem tree, or the Indian margosa tree, is a very common Indian tree which grows in the evergreen dense forests.Neem is known for its immeasurable medicinal properties and is used as a main ingredient in many home remedies. Commending the medicinal properties of neem, numerous sanskrit names have been coined by our ayurveda acharyas.

It is biologically named as Azadirachta indica, which literally means 'free tree of India'. This name has been given to the neem tree by the Persian inhabitants, who were among the first foreign people to know about the hundreds of curative uses of the tree. Neem has huge tree that attains a height of 40 to 50 feet. Leaves are small and of green color. Bark is brown in color with cracks on it. Its trunk is light brown to yellow in color from inside. The leaves are bitter to taste. Fruit is small and round in shape.

Neem tree is best known for its healing and medicinal properties and hence, it is often used in most of the herbal medicines. The fact that each and every part of neem tree including the bark, seeds, flower, leaves, fruit pulp etc. can be put to use, the herbal medicine makers treat it as the most preferred source of crude medicine among all.

Neem tree fruits in summers i.e. in May to July. Neem has been used as pesticide since early ages because of its remarkable property of fighting away with pest and microorganism, that are supposed to be harmful for agricultural and homely purpose and hence makes neem the most wonderful partner of human in his evolution. Neem leaves are used in the preparation of large number of different kind of soaps, creams, lotions, oil. Neem leaves are used by Ayurvedic practitioners for treating different fungal infections such as athlete's foot, fungal infections of vagina and mouth. Neem leaves are also used in herpes and proved to be very effective for skin lesions.

Neem is great for body care. In toothpaste, it keeps your mouth and gums clean and healthy. In shampoo is great for itchy scalps or other skin disorders. You can use this shampoo on your dog to keep away pests like fleas and ticks as well. Neem soap can be helpful for those with skin rashes or other skin related problems such as acne, eczema, psoriasis or scabies. It can also be used for head lice.

Neem, as a natural eczema remedy, has anti bacterial, anti parasitic, anti fungal, anti viral and anti protozoal properties. It prevents micro organisms from entering into your body. For eczema sufferers, this is good news. Very often, bacteria is being introduced into your body through your broken skin, a result from scratching and itching.

Neem is very commonly used in problems related to urinary tract. It helps in neutralizing any infectious condition in the urinary tract and also tones up the tract for proper functioning. Neem is also seen effective in preventing the calculi formation in the body.

Incense sticks are used in almost each and every household. The incense sticks made of neem yield a soothing fragrance that relieves body, mind, and soul. Moreover, they are known for their unique quality of refining the air by killing harmful bacteria present in the air, and also for driving out mosquitoes and flies. Neem does not kill insects or grubs instantly! It acts as a feeding repellent and it also interrupts their breeding cycle. Neem is similar to insect hormones. When insects take up the neem ingredients they "forget" to eat, to mate, or they stop laying eggs. Some forget that they can fly. If eggs are produced they don't hatch, or the larvae don't moult.
