Know More About White Willow Bark Benefits

By rickie wright at 2010-12-30 00:31:05
White willow bark has been used for centuries in relieving pain and fever. The ancient Egyptian pharaohs used white willow bark to treat inflammation and chances are big that it was used even before the Egyptians. We know that the great Greek physician Hippocrates was well aware of the positive effects of the bark and he used it to lower fevers among his patients. White Willow has been used to treat the symptoms of arthritis in conjunction with other supplements for many years. The White Willow Bark is a tree that is native to Europe and Asia. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians knew that the bark of the tree had anti-inflammatory properties and could relieve pain. During the 1800s it was discovered that the active ingredient in the bark is salicin.

White Willow bark is nature's all-natural pain reliever, the original source of aspirin. The history use of white willow bark medicinally goes far back, maybe far back 400 BC can you believe it. 400 years before the birth of Christ, ancient Greek physician Hippocrates let he's patients to chew on the bark to reduce their fever and inflammation. The clusters of creamy white flowers are nestled against the dark green large evergreen leaves. Clusters contain between 30 to 100 blossoms. The tree will eventually reach 30 feet tall. The fruit is oval shaped and between one to two inches long. The taste is sweet and tart. The loquat was thought to originally be imported from Japan and China.

White willow bark is naturally buffered and acts gently, working along with its other chemical components. Unlike aspirin, white willow bark does not normally upset or irritate the stomach. This is likely because white willow contains tannins, which help to reduce inflammation in the digestive system. When a stack of stimulants and aspirin (or white willow bark) enter the body, a little light goes off (not literally) telling the body that it was just stimulated as the metabolism begins increasing. In response, the body begins producing phosphodiesterase inside your cells and prostaglandins outside your body's cells. Both of these reactions lower cAMP levels, slowing the metabolism boost from the ECA stack. White willow bark also has anti-inflammatory, anti-fever, and mild analgesic properties. As a preventative for heart attacks, white willow bark is believed to work in the same way as aspirin.

It is one of the cool to cold herbs according to traditional Chinese medicine and it is used to treat infertility caused by kidney yin deficiency as a result of overeating spicy foods, or working in hot environments. Willow bark is usually safe and well tolerated. It is not a recommended herb for pregnant and nursing women. If you are allergic to aspirin, avoid using this herb. It must not be taken by people who are undergoing operation two weeks before and after the surgery. It may cause complications with wound healing and bleeding disorder. This herb is known to interact with some medications.

The pain relieving action as analgesic is due to the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by the salicin derivatives, which cause sensitization of peripheral pain receptors, and "natural aspirin" from the willow bark seems to have far less side effects than the synthetic aspirin made by pharmaceutical companies. White Willow is a popular herbal remedy for those that suffer from inflammation associated with gout.

In addition to this, White Willow may benefit the gout patient in the following ways:

Those that experience high levels of pain with their gout may experience less using this herbal remedy. If a fever is experienced as a result of an infection associated with gout, it will likely be reduced.
