English Walnuts, 'Juglans regia,' were brought into the United States by Spanish missionaries in the early 1800's by Franciscan monks, who settled along the California coast. Because the English walnut orchards, that were rapidly established in Central California came from the seeds planted from those walnuts that grew in the Catholic missions, the walnuts were sold and distributed under the name 'Mission Walnuts.' Although there is a great diversity in walnut trees, just three basic kinds of walnuts are eaten. The English, or Persian, walnut is one type, and the other two are the black and the white walnuts. English walnuts are the favorite and most widely used type in America. The shell is lighter, so it is easy to crack it with a nut cracker. The shell of the black walnut has a strong scent and is quite hard.

Walnuts benefits may seem hard to obtain because they are hard nuts to crack, but they're the kind of nuts worth cracking. They are hard on the outside, but they are definitely yummy on the inside. And what makes them even yummier is the fact that the hard nutshell swathes a kernel that's packed with the essential nutrients needed by our body to function well. The newest buzz in the world of health care is Omega-3 and walnuts deliver just that. The Omega-3 content in walnuts is significantly higher when compared to other nuts. The Omega-3 fatty acids in walnuts are heart friendly and are proven to lower LDL cholesterol. Walnut boasts of an array of health benefits.

Consumption of walnuts also helps in reducing swelling. This is because walnuts contain anti-inflammatory properties that will reduce inflammation that one might have. Because of the nutrients that walnuts have, especially omega 3 and alpha linoleic acid, consumption of these nuts also helps improve the cognitive function of the body. The hardwood that Black Walnut trees produce has a dark coloured heartwood, which has long been popular in America partly due to it being the darkest of all North American hardwoods, and due to its exception qualities. Thus it was used in great numbers by the early colonists of the United States in their homes.

Women in general get the healthful effects of walnuts benefits, especially those who are fertile, overweight, and at the age of 40 (or approaching it). These are the women who are most likely to develop gall bladder stones. According to the Nurses' Health Study, women who eat at least 1 ounce of nuts (particularly walnuts) showed lower risks of developing gallstones. To lower your risk of cardiovascular and coronary heart disease, enjoy a handful of walnuts, or other antioxidant-rich nuts, at least 4 times a week. Add chopped walnuts to your muffins or simply have them with fruit and yoghurt as your breakfast. A wonderful, little known fact is that not only do walnuts lower cholesterol, but they also help lower blood pressure. The omega-3 fatty acids found in walnuts act as a blood thinner preventing blood clots and helping the blood flow more smoothly.

Besides omega-3 fatty acids and protein, walnuts also have vitamin E, potassium, fiber, and cholesterol lowering compounds known as plant sterols. Walnuts are also a very good source of manganese and a good source of copper. Walnut allergy is a form of diet of food induced allergy that afflicts many people around the world. Like in other cases of diet allergies, this also leads to vomiting and expulsion of ingested food, appearance of hives, as well as stomach ache and diarrhea. LDL levels were also reduced, although this finding just barely failed to reach statistical significance. Importantly, these favorable changes in blood lipid levels were found to be more pronounced in patients with elevated total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels.
