Myrrh -An Essential Herb

By rickie wright at 2011-01-05 01:08:45
Myrrh essential oil is from a small tree mainly found in the Somalia, Egypt and the Red Sea area. Its scientific name is commiphora myrrha. Myrrh was used in religious ceremonious during the ancient times. In fact, myrrh was said in the bible as one of the gifts of the three magi when they visited the child Jesus.

The name myrrh is believed to be derived from the Arabic "Mur", meaning bitter, and is sourced from the branches of a number of different small trees or shrubs native to parts of East Africa, the Middle East and the Indian sub-continent. The branches release a richly aromatic resin-like substance which has been highly prized in these Eastern regions since ancient times and was used as a perfume, herbal medicine and embalming agent amongst many other functions.

Myrrh or Commiphora myrrha is obtained through steam distillation of the resin which comes from the trees grown in Somalia and other Middle Eastern areas. The myrrh tree looks very similar to the frankincense tree. It grows in arid desert lands and can reach a height of about 30 feet.

When aromatherapy started to become popular, so was the myrrh. Its yellow to brown color has become a favourite in aromatherapy because of its it can be blended with other essential oils like lavender, rosewood and sandal to produce a scent that can be both therapeutic and aromatic.

In the treatment of coughs and colds, Myrrh Essential Oil work as an expectorant to release and clear mucous in the lungs. It may also provide relief from sore throats, bronchitis and coughs associated with colds. It is used as a mouthwash, Myrrh Essential Oil can assist in relief of symptoms of gingivitis, mouth ulcers and gum disorders.

Myrrh may also have anti-inflammatory properties, lower lipoproteins and C-reactive proteins. The nutrient might also protect against drug-induced myocardial necrosis. Guggulipid reduces the secretion of sebum and slows the metabolism of triglycerides that have been known to cause acne. Myrrh has a lot of healing properties. It is anti-infectious, antiviral, anti-parasitic, anti-inflammatory, hormone-like, anti-hyperthyroid, and supports the immune system. It is good for diarrhea, thrush in babies, vaginal thrush, athlete's foot, ringworm, viral hepatitis, chapped skin, wrinkles. It is used in a lot of skin care products for its ability to smooth out wrinkles. Its astringent properties make it helpful for hemorrhoids and for healing ulcers of all kinds. Aside from that, it is used to treat toothaches, bruises, sprains, and aches because of its analgesic property. Other health benefits includes but are not limited to: asthma, bed sores, colitis, bad breath, candida infections, diarrhea, emphysema, eczema, gangrene, lead infections, shock, pyorrhea, painful teething, sun burn, and ulcers.

Myrrh can be diffused, applied topically as well as ingested. When diffusing it, remember that because of the amount of sesquiterpenes, this oil will oxidize every time the bottle is opened, meaning it will become thicker and thicker. You may need to clean your diffuser frequently since it will "gum-up" the cold-air diffuser. Cancer and heart disease are out two biggest killers. Chronic inflammation plays a role in both of them. So does oxidation. One of the myrrh extract benefits is to prevent the oxidation of fats. Fat oxidation is what causes the plaque buildup that is seen in the arteries of people with atherosclerosis and other types of heart disease.

Myrrh is an extremely effective antibiotic and disinfectant that causes the body to increase its white blood cells four-fold which helps with the immune system. This herb's antiseptic, anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties make it a fantastic treatment for vaginal yeast infections. Myrrh is excellent for skin too. Especially dry, cracked, or wrinkled skin. It is also highly indicated for mucous membranes such as for mouth care, perineal care in child birth, and the healing qualities also address respiratory problems such as colds, flu, and bronchitis.
