Diverticulitis is one of the most common diseases of the colon in individuals over the age of 40. In America, it is estimated that two thirds of the country's population will develop diverticulitis by the time they are 85. Usually, you are advised to eat more fiber-rich foods. But when you are having a diverticulitis attack, you don't want to do that. You want to be on a low residue diet because they do not stress the colon out very much.

High fiber diet will burden your intestinal tract and irritate the inflammed membranes. Staying on low fiber diet promotes healing of the inflammed diverticula.

So stay on a low fiber diet while you are recovering and once you're well you can begin to increase your fiber intake gradually in order to prevent future attacks.
